South Ossetia's diverse economy includes wood processing, mining, production of construction materials, food production and light industry. Dairy and meat products are the country's most important agricultural products. South Ossetia also enjoys a wealth of natural resources including precious metals and mineral deposits. Natural springs provide sparkling mineral water that is coveted for its health qualities. The country also has several large textile and apparel factories, machinery production and food processing plants. Prior to the war with Georgia in the 1990s, South Ossetia was a valued vacation spot featuring wooded mountains and lakes.
