Foreign Relations
The Republic of South Ossetia seeks recognition from and normal relations with all nations. For two decades, Georgia, backed by supporters in the United States and NATO, has used force to try and reassert control over the South Ossetian people. The South Ossetian government has sought to resolve this territorial dispute peacefully, through ongoing negotiations with the United Nations, the European Union and other international bodies.
In 2008, Russia honored South Ossetia by becoming the first state to recognize its independence. Nicaragua has joined suit and other nations are expected to follow.
Russia is a close ally of South Ossetia. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity have forged a close political and economic relationship and the Russian people provided generous financial assistance and other support after the August conflict.
South Ossetia's foreign policy goals include a final settlement of the conflict with Georgia, expanded international trade, and good relations with all nations based on friendship and mutual respect.
